renewable energy
As a business philosophy, Shaw Farm supports the idea of energy independence for our company and for our nation, but also as part of a sustainable business model. In the year 2015 we began to aggressively pursue any idea that lowered our energy costs as it was clear that our power related costs would eventually make it difficult to meet payroll expense.First, with every incentive available, replacing light fixtures as well as the use of variable speed motors and drives. With the construction of our new processing facility and farm store and the use of a federal energy grant we installed a horizontal geothermal heating and air conditioning system which began to chip away at both electrical and oil use.
The 400kw ground mounted solar array provides the greatest reason for our long-term sustainability.
The array makes use of the federal energy tax credit and makes use of thoughtful solar incentives from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Our array is 100 % agricultural net metering as well as receiving SRECs and spilling into the grid through the Massachusetts “Smart “program.
Our family farm is also part of an anaerobic digester project providing over 50% of the herds Manure to make possible the successful generation of electricity from cow manure and food waste.
